Where to eat.....a taste of Montreal

by Vera Marinkovic

1.Taste a piece of history at legendary Schwartz's Montreal Delicatessen-There you’ll find the BEST smoked meat in the world! Usually there is a line at lunchtime, but the wait is definitely worth it!

Holesterol alert!!!! Montreal smoked meat is fatty, brine-cured beef similar to pastrami.

Schwartz's Montreal Delicatessen

History of Schwartz:

Schwartz's has changed very little since its opening. A small narrow, ten-table deli, has been serving delicious smoked meet sandwiches since it was founded in 1927 by Reuben Schwartz, Jewish immigrant from Romania. It has been in the same location on Saint-Laurent Boulevard since its opening. Quality is maintained by smoking the meat daily, using no preservatives and keeping the traditional recipe. Before meat is smoked it is marinated for 10 days in a secret blend of fine herbs and spices. This small restaurant is a "true" Montreal landmark that has welcomed celebrities and visitors from all over the world. The Rolling Stones, Angelina Jolie, Celine Dion, Tim Allen and Halle Berry are some of the few celebrities who are known to have been there.

What to order?

When in Montreal - do as Montrealers do, order smoked meat sandwich, with "medium smoked meat" on a rye bread smothered with mustard and side dishes of pickle and coleslaw. The meal would not be complete without a Cott’s black cherry soda. If you do not care about tradition you should order what ever you want.

2. Try the best “poutine “ in Quebec at Resto la Banquiese a.k.a. La Banquiese

What is “poutine” (pronounced poo-teen)? Poutine is a so gooooood French-Canadian junk food that you must try to understand why is described “as the BEST junk food taste sensation on earth”. It is a dish consisting of French fries topped with cheddar cheese curds and hot gravy.

3. Try fresh, hot from the oven “Montreal style” bagels (they are denser and chewier than their New York cousins and are boiled in honey water and baked in wood burning oven) or home-made croissants from one of the bakeries in Mile End neighbourhood
